Connect

Now that you've got Touchpad Pro up and running, you need to connect to a Server. This is a program running on your PC/Mac that'll allow you to control it. Once you've set up your PC/Mac, you'll have to add the server's name, address and vnc password to Touchpad Pro to connect.

  1. Installing VNC Server
    • If you're running Windows:
      1. Download TightVNC and install it.
      2. If there's no icon with a V on the bottom right corner of the screen, find TightVNC in your Start Menu > Programs folder, and click on Launch VNC Server.
      3. Set the password to something you'll remember.
      4. Hover your mouse over the V icon on the bottom right corner of the screen, and write down the IP address that comes up.
    • If you're on a Mac:
      1. You already have VNC installed, but it's called Screen Sharing or Apple Remote Desktop. Go to System Preferences, and then Sharing.
      2. Turn on Screen Sharing (or "Apple Remote Desktop" on older Macs); you'll be given a host name or an IP address, write this down.
      3. Turn on VNC viewer controls in the Settings box, and give it a password you'll remember.
  2. Setting it up on Touchpad Pro
    1. Click on the + icon at the top right corner of the screen
    2. Enter anything for the name, e.g., homepc
    3. Enter the IP address or host name you wrote down earlier. This can either be four numbers with dots, e.g., 192.168.1.42, or one or more words, e.g., yourhost.lan
    4. Enter the password you were supposed to remember
    5. Click Save
  3. Connect by clicking on the name you entered (e.g., homepc). If all goes well, you should now be connected to your PC/Mac, and you can now learn how to use Touchpad Pro.
If you have any problems, check out the troubleshooting guide. You might also want to check out Lee Bialecki's blog entry on Touchpad Pro.

Wow that's wicked cool!

It's a little bit awkward to use and slightly slow to respond sometimes, but what an awesome idea!! Great work!

Ive been able to get my iPhone to connect to my computer once but other than that I get error messages. I believe I have everything set up right but I keep getting this message "Connection Failed - Connection could not be made to host "my ip" port 5900

I have some problems with TightVNC.
When I click Launch TightVNCServer, it says: another instance of TightVNC is already running. When I click Configure TightVNC settings a window just pop-ups saying "Do you wish to configure your time and date settings." Can you recommend me another client that isn't TightVNC? Because TightVNC is just not working.

Followed your instructions, but when it tries to connect, it just spins the little icon endlessly and nothing happens. Mac 10.4.11

Hey, I think this app looks awesome, but I can't get it to work. I've set it up just as it has said, but I continually get the error on my iphone, "connection could not be made to host"... and I have an active WIFI.. also is the password limited to 8 char? because everytime I reset the password, it always goes back to 8 characters when I open it back up. if you could help me, that'd be great. thanks

same problem here! anyone sort this out??

cmhowsden said...

All, I don't see it addressed anywhere on the page here, but you need to make sure that you allow incoming connections on port 5900. If another application is already using that port, you need to make necessary adjustments (i.e. tell your VNC server to listen on a free port and then if you have a firewall, open that port up). Hope this helps someone.

I would love to have this working, but alas, I have the same issues of not connecting. I am using the correct port, am on WIFI using correct IP, Vista, iPhone, and TightVNC...

Great application, thanks so much. I've been considering buying a wireless apple keyboard to use on my couch for a while, but didn't want to have to worry about also having to have a mouse and where to use as a mousepad etc. This solves that problem perfectly! Donation is coming soon.

i running vnc server on airport extreme wiwfi turned off firewall to test...

it says connection terminated..authentication failed..server reports authentication failed

It works perfect at home, where i have no wirless security...

but at school, i have huge problems...
even tho i'm connected to the same network.
I always get "Connection Failed: Connection could not be made to host 10.156.1.86 port 5900"

could you make a tinyguide how to directly connect the iPhone to your macintosh?
Or how to connect your iPhone to a network made by the macintosh?

Seems like the problems occur when both the mac and iPhone has to be on the same wireless.

Thanks for the app.

you need to be on the same wifi network as your computer -- though your computer can be either wired into the router or connected through the same wifi network.

i've put up a troubleshooting guide at http://www.touchpadpro.com/2008/03/connection-troubleshooting.html please check that out.

Bro, I think this is a great Ap. But mind my ignorance, where do I download the TightVNC ????

magon said...

this really is a great tool
i just have ine question:
in editing server there is a line called: display which is set to 0
what is that?

JS said...

@rainman007: try http://downloads.sourceforge.net/vnc-tight/tightvnc-1.3.9-setup.exe

@magon: if you're unsure, leave display to 0 -- it's for multiple vnc servers on the same pc and/or if you're using a different port. most people will rarely need it.

its a great apps
just want to give a suggestion/request
could you please add NumPad options for us to use our iphone as a wireless numpad for our Macbook'ers
Thank you

Absolutely frakin' awesome. You should have seen my family freak when I picked up my iPhone to remote control the entertainment center PC.

Suggestion: The built in keyboard has no [TAB] key, therefore you cannot [ALT][TAB] between applications. Any chance of adding it (at Tab key) down with the alt Ctrl keys?

for all of u that are getting the port error, u have to disable your firewall and it should work

I am on Mac (not Leopard). I have no issues with being on the same wireless network.

When I try to connect, nothing happens. The iPhone icon just spins and spins and spins.

This is soooooo brilliant. Thank you!! Will donate towards your work, it's the most worthwhile software I've used since Leopard.

Don't know if any Mac users have been experiencing this, but running screen sharing via OSX makes my processor flip out. My MB 1,83GHz runs the process at 50% and my G4 PB can't even handle it.

So I finally go round to fining a decent alternative and came across Vine Server. It's just as simple as Leopards VNC, but uses a fraction of the power. Now my MacBook won't over heat!

this app is awesome
the first time i tried it worked for me
good details on how to set it up
only thing that i got confused on was u said their is a little v on the right bottom of the screen, i thought that a tightvnc screen would pop up and it would be on the bottom of that.
but i finally figured it out.
thanks for the help
anything else u can do with it?

I have som problem...
I've had Touchpad Pro installed and got working before, but now it seems there's something not working when trying to add a VNC server nothing's saved.
I type mychosen name, IP and password and tap "save" but once back in the Server list nothing shows.
What is happening here?
(I'm getting the same trying setting up a server in VNsea)

Can anyone help?

tlhintoq said...

MacOS 10.5.2 & TouchPad 3 working fine here.
Rather than using IP address that changes based on my DSL I went with the computer name. Remember that is a *network* name such as "QuadG5.local".

I notice that TouchPad doesn't detect if WiFi is turned off on the iPhone, resulting in the endless wait cursor I've seen others report. That seems like a basic thing to check for a WiFi based application.

Hi, I have the same problems as the theplague. I press +, add the needed information and then press save. But the server list is still empty. No message occurs. I use Touchpad Pro 3.0. Has anyone an idea?

theplague said...

oklemenz:
Did you unlock/activate/jailbreak with iLiberty+?
There's been discussions this might have something to do with this problem.
If you have your problem can be some kind of evidence this is the case.
Otherwise, did you unlock/activate/jailbreak with anything else(ziphone, iPlus etc)?

theplague said...

oklemenz:
IF you used iLiberty+ here's probably the solution: http://ipluspwns.com/?q=node/338

oklemenz said...

theplague:
Yes, I used iLiberty+. Do you have any further information or discussions how this can be fixed.
Would be nice to have the touchpad pro, but don't want to do everything again...

theplague said...

oklemenz:
Ok, here's what you need to do:
Download Putty(if you're on a PC - http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe ) and SSH yourself into your iPhone.
Execute the following command line in the prompt window:

chown -R mobile:mobile /var/mobile/Library/Preferences

This totally fixed my iPhone.

This might sound weird but I need to use touchpad over a wireless connection however I need to have access through an Ethernet cable to another server. I got touchpad working with a router that is not hooked up to any internet, but when I plug in a network cable to my computer I loose connection. Is this even possible, and if so how could I do this? thanks in advance for any help.

tlhintoq said...

Shane:

It sounds like your steps are:
1. Make TouchPad connection via WiFi
2. Plug in cat5
3. Loose TouchPad connection

Just a guess, but your I.P. address is changing when the cat5 cable is plugged in, thus breaking your TouchPad connection.

Have you tried having the PC on the network via WiFi and ethernet *then* making TouchPad connection?
