Can I add keys like Control or Shift to the media controls, or the remote control?

Yes, if you're using Touchpad Pro, just press the appropriate key before pressing the remote control or media button. If you're using Web Access, this isn't currently supported, but will be one of the features in a future release.

How do I reveal more keys in the remote control?

Grab the scroll bars on the top part of the remote, and scroll to the right.

The song name gets shown for just a second and then goes away. How can I fix this?

Download the trial edition of Touchpad Media Server and run it.
- If your computer doesn't recognize .msi files, follow these steps.
- If you get a message saying that you need to install the .NET framework, download and install this first, and then go back to step 1.
Once you've got everything installed, go to the Start Menu, then click on Programs > Touchpad Pro > Touchpad Media Server Trial. You should now see this (although you'll currently be running the trial version):
There's one final option you'll need to set -- choose the player your want to control: iTunes, Winamp, Generic and Windows Media Player.
- iTunes or Winamp: These will give you the best user experience for the time being. These players support all the 9 buttons on the media remote, as well as graphical updates of the currently playing song, and you can even drag the knob to skip around in a song. Even if the player isn't currently open, it will automatically be launched -- and even if it isn't the currently highlighted window, it will still respond to the media remote.
- Generic: Use this setting to control ANY media player (such as Media Center, Windows Media Player, etc.). This will make the media remote buttons act like the media buttons on your regular keyboard / laptop. Play/pause, next track, previous track, stop, and the volume buttons will all control whatever media player is currently in focus. Fast forward and rewind will trigger the left and right arrow keys, while the rest of the buttons act as regular media buttons. There is no visual feedback on your device's screen, which makes the media remote act purely as an input device (unless you activate ScreenView). Depending on your media player, the volume buttons will either control the global volume on your computer or the volume of the media player.
- Windows Media Player: With this option selected, your media remote will control Windows Media Player -- if it hasn't currently started, it will be automatically launched, and if it's not the currently focused window, it will still respond to the media remote. However, I haven't gotten it working to the point where you can seek around in a song, or even get the current track name or volume setting. Because of this, there is no visual feedback on your screen -- the media remote will act purely as an input device (unless you activate ScreenView). You can use the Play/Pause, Stop, Next/Previous Track buttons as well as the volume buttons -- note that the volume will only be set in Windows Media Player.
You now have two options to connect: you can either use Touchpad Pro, or you can use any web browser.

Using Touchpad Pro

To connect with Touchpad Pro, follow these instructions. If you've already set up a server, go to the server settings page by clicking on the blue arrow next to your computer name (e.g., mediapc), and enable Media Server (this is the default value). When you connect, you'll have the extra media functionality enabled. Tap the remote button to get access to the media controls.

Using a Web Browser

This is useful if you don't want to jailbreak your device, or if you have a different smartphone with a web browser. The web location is indicated by "Touchpad Web Access" on the screen. In the example shown above, you would point your device's (iPhone / iTouch / Windows Mobile) browser to http://192.168.3.33:6000

To enable ScreenView, you need to activate your copy of Touchpad Pro.

Activation is now free -- you can just tap the Check Activation button in Touchpad Pro and it will activate your copy for free.

Also, if you're running Apple Desktop Sharing, you will need to install Vine Server to get ScreenView to work. Screen Sharing works perfectly, but Apple Desktop Sharing is incompatible with ScreenView at this time.

Here's some useful information on how to use Touchpad Pro v4:

Click with a quick tap
Right-click with a quick two fingered tap
Scroll with two fingered vertical swipes
Present PowerPoint with two fingered horizontal swipes
Zoom by pinching with two fingers
Type by clicking on the keyboard icon

Want to control your Media Center? Use the Remote Control button. With Touchpad Media Server, you can control iTunes or Media Player even if it's not currently the top window. If you don't have Touchpad Media Server, you'll be able to control media players with reduced functionality.

You can scroll the remote horizontally to reveal extra buttons -- such as the function keys, and a numeric keypad. In an upcoming release, you'll be able to customize these buttons yourself!

There's now a Windows button which requires Touchpad Media Server to work. You can use it in conjunction with the keyboard for standard shortcuts -- for instance, Windows-D will display the desktop.

The modifiers (e.g., Shift / Control / etc.) work like the Caps key on the iPhone keyboard. If you press the button once, it will glow -- meaning that it's only going to be on for the next single keypress. So if you press Control and then C, it'll fire Ctrl-C, and then Control will go off. If you want to keep a modifier on, double click it -- that'll make it blue, which means that it's on until you click it again to turn it off.

Details

Here's what each of the advanced gestures / buttons result in:

Scroll: Mousewheel Up / Down
Zoom: Ctrl-Plus / Ctrl-Minus
Horizontal Swipe: Left/Right Arrow Keys
Arrows: Arrow Keys
OK: Enter

In Mac Mode, there are some major differences:

Right-click: Command-Click.
Zoom: Cmd-Opt-Equals / Cmd-Opt-Minus -- does Universal Zoom!

For regular zoom, just press the Cmd button before zooming -- this will result in Cmd-Equals and Cmd-Minus.

Remember, you can combine Shift/Ctrl/Alt with each command. For example:

To navigate your browser history, you can enable Alt, and then use horizontal swipes or the arrow keys (Alt-Left / Alt-Right)
To press Ctrl-C, enable Ctrl, and then press C on the on-screen keyboard
To press Alt-F4, enable Alt, and then F4 on the Remote Control function keypad
To launch Windows Task Manager, enable Ctrl and Shift, and then press Esc on the Remote Control
To press Ctrl-Alt-Del, enable Ctrl and Alt, and then Del on the Remote Control numeric keypad

If you're running Apple Remote Desktop, and ScreenView is not working even after activation, you will need to follow these instructions to install Vine Server instead.
If you're having trouble with Screen Sharing, you should also try installing Vine Server.
If you've got Vine Server running, but are still having problems, you might be connecting to the wrong port. In the Vine Server window, there should be a Port number displayed. If that port number is anything other than 5900, you need to enter this number in Touchpad Pro's server settings. If your port is set to (for instance) 5901, and your server's hostname is homemac, in Touchpad Pro's server settings, your address field should be homemac:5901 -- or if you've entered an IP address in the address field such as 192.168.1.3, you would need to make it 192.168.1.3:5901.
If your password doesn't seem to work, and you get a warning saying too many security failures, you have more than one VNC server running and you are connecting to the wrong one. Make sure you have turned off Screen Sharing, Apple Remote Desktop, and Remote Management. Also make sure that in Vine Server, only one server is running (either the server or the system server, but not both). Finally, make sure that the one server you are running has its port set to 5900. If it's not, go back to step 3.
Go to System Preferences > Security and then click Firewall. Try setting it to "Allow all incoming connections" temporarily to see if this might be causing the problem. If it is, you need to make your firewall allow your VNC server to get incoming connections.

If you've paid for ScreenView activation, you can get support if you've tried each of these steps and you're still stuck. To do so, please reply to the email you received on activation, as it includes your serial and transaction ID. Describe your connection problem in detail in that email.

Configuring the Firewall

This sounds scarier than it is :) Just follow these simple steps:

Click on the Start Menu, and click on Control Panel
In Control Panel, click on Network and Internet Connections:
Then, click on Change Windows Firewall Settings:
Now check to see if your firewall is on. If the firewall is off, STOP here -- you don't need to change anything. However, if it's on, then you need to keep reading.
Make sure the exceptions button is not checked:
Next click on the Exceptions tab at the top:
In the Exceptions view, click on the Add Port button:
Set the name to "VNC Server", and set the port to 5900. Press OK.
Click on Add Port again. This time, set the name to "Touchpad Media Server", and set the port to 6000. Press OK.
Click OK on the Windows Firewall page and pat yourself on the back -- you just configured the firewall settings to allow TightVNC and Touchpad Media Server to work with your firewall. Remember, if your firewall was off to begin with, you don't need to do any of this.

If you're having trouble connecting to either TightVNC or Touchpad Media Server, go through the following checklist:

If you're not running TightVNC 1.3.9, uninstall your existing VNC server and install TightVNC 1.3.9. Seriously, you'd be surprised at how many people miss this step, thinking that their VNC server couldn't be the problem.
If you're using Vista, and are seeing a black screen, disable Aero.
Double-click the TightVNC icon in the status bar, and see what the main port number is set to.

If it's anything other than 5900, for instance 5901, you'll need to go to the Edit Server screen in Touchpad Pro, and add :5901 to your address as shown below:
Configure your firewall. If your port number is not 5900, make sure that you use your actual port number (e.g. 5901) in step 8.
If you're seeing a black screen even after buying ScreenView, you've probably forgotten to turn on ScreenView. In Touchpad Pro, tap the blue icon next to your server name, and then set ScreenView to On or Hi-Def (for higher color quality).

If you've paid for ScreenView activation, or for Touchpad Media Server, you can get support if you've tried each of these steps and you're still stuck. To do so, please reply to the email you received on activation, as it includes your transaction ID and serial. Describe your connection problem in detail in that email.

Not at this time. Furthermore, we have no confirmed timeframe for when this will be possible.

What is your policy for refunds on ScreenView Activation?

If you ask for a refund within 30 days of buying ScreenView, you will get a refund without any questions asked.

I'm having trouble connecting. What should I do?

Follow the instructions troubleshooting guides for Windows and Mac. If you're still stuck, post a detailed description of what the issue is along with a contact email.

Can I transfer an activation from one iPhone to another?

Yes you can. Email us your Transaction ID, your old serial and your new serial.

Can I stream movies / music to Touchpad Pro using ScreenView?

ScreenView is optimized for desktop access, and not for video streaming. Audio streaming is also not supported at this time.

Can I use ScreenView to connect to multiple computers with one activation?

Yes. While an activation only enables ScreenView for one iPhone or iPod Touch, it can then be used to connect to any number of computers.

What is the Limit Mac CPU option for?

This option is designed for use with Leopard's Screen Sharing. When connecting to a Mac running Screen Sharing using MacMode, keep this option enabled for optimal performance. Screen Sharing has a few different requirements than a regular VNC server, and this option ensures that those requirements are met. [One difference is that screen refresh requests are continually sent to the server even when with ScreenView switched off, to ensure that your Mac's CPU load remains low. The next difference is that when ScreenView is turned on, instead of an 8-bit pixel depth, it's set to 16-bit, as that is what Screen Sharing requires.]

Can I use Touchpad Pro with my laptop without a wireless router? Also, can I use Touchpad Pro's ScreenView to connect to my home computer from work? From my friend's place? From a different city or country?

Yes you can! Here's how to set this up.

When using ScreenView, what's the difference between On and Hi-Def?

Setting ScreenView On makes it connect at the highest speed possible, with the lowest picture quality. Hi-Def mode boosts the color quality, but at the cost of a slower connection. Depending on your need, you can choose between either one -- or make two server entries so that you can have both options available whenever you need them.

I sometimes see multiple cursors in ScreenView which aren't there on my desktop. Why is this?

You can also notice these ghost cursors in the videos. The reason they appear is simple. To give you the fastest response time when you move the mouse in Touchpad Pro, no screen refresh requests are made while you're moving the mouse. Screen refreshes take a lot of wireless bandwidth (and battery), and if these refreshes were happening while your mouse was moving, the cursor on your computer screen might not move as smoothly as you're used to with Touchpad Pro. When you stop moving the cursor, the screen immediately updates, showing you where the mouse actually is. So the 'ghost' cursor is just where your mouse was when you started moving -- and it's not a bug, it's a feature.

This is open source software -- how can you charge for it?

Selling open source software is encouraged. By 'free', it means that it has freedom, not that it's without charge. All the source code for Touchpad Pro is available for download and can be changed and redistributed by anyone as long as they also distribute the source code. Also, most of the functionality of Touchpad Pro is available for free -- only a few features are locked. If you don't want to pay for it -- continue using the free version as much as you'd like.

I don't have a credit card / I don't have a PayPal account / I'm thirteen and I can't buy anything. I still want the stuff that costs money. What are my options?

Find a friend or relative, and ask them nicely if they'll make the payment on your behalf. Mow your neighbor's lawn in exchange for it. If you're really motivated, you can find a legal way to do it. Do not hack someone else's PayPal account to make a payment! This is really unacceptable (and it's happened once).

Installing VNC

To connect Touchpad Pro v4 with a Windows machine, you first need to have VNC installed. If you've never heard of VNC, follow these steps. Even if you have VNC installed, I highly recommend uninstalling your current version, and following these steps, as older versions of VNC have some problems (e.g. dual monitor support is missing from earlier versions).

Go to the TightVNC download page. Donate to them if you can -- they're doing great work. Then download the latest version, as shown here:
Run the installer, clicking through all the steps. Be sure to choose the following options when installing (Vista users: uncheck all the checkboxes):
XP users: once TightVNC is installed, it will automatically launch and you should have a TightVNC icon at the bottom left corner of your Windows screen. Vista users: you need to manually start the "Launch TightVNC Server" icon from Start Menu > Programs > TightVNC.
Hover your mouse over that icon and write down the IP address that comes up (four numbers separated by dots):
(Optional) Install Touchpad Media Server.

Setting up Touchpad Pro
- On the VNC servers page, click the + icon:
- Then follow these instructions:
- Click the Save button.
The session name (e.g. mediapc) will now be added to the list of VNC servers. Tap it to connect.

If you are unable to connect, you might need to configure your firewall, or your iPhone might be on a different network than your computer. Read through the Windows Troubleshooting Guide for more help.

Setting up your Mac

Go to System Preferences, and then Sharing:
Enable Screen Sharing (it's called Apple Remote Desktop on older Macs).
You'll be shown a host name to connect to (e.g., homemac.lan, or 192.168.0.1)
Click on the Options button, and enable the VNC password, and type in a password
Click OK, and then click Show All to return to the System Preferences page. From here, click on Universal Access
Enable Zoom, and then click on the Zoom Options button
Enter the setting shown below
Click OK -- you've now set up your Mac.

Setting up Touchpad Pro

On the VNC servers page, click the + icon:
Then follow these instructions:
Click the Save button.

The session name (e.g. homemac) will now be added to the list of VNC servers. Tap it to connect.

It is strongly recommended that you replace Screen Sharing / Apple Remote Desktop with Vine Server. Vine Server is faster, has better support for ScreenView, and uses less power on your Mac and on your iPhone / iPod Touch.

Setting up Touchpad Pro on your iPhone or iPod Touch involves a number of simple steps:

Make sure you try this only on firmware 1.1.4 or less. If your device has the App Store icon, you cannot get Touchpad Pro working on it at this time.
Once you're sure you have firmware 1.1.4 or less, if you have the Installer application on your device, move on to step 3. Otherwise, you need to jailbreak your device. Jailbreaking (aka "software unlocking") is safe and easily reversible. Follow these steps to unlock your device.
Start Installer and click on the Install button. Go to Utilities. Touchpad Pro should already be there. Select Touchpad Pro and tap the Install button.

If it isn't there, go to Install and then Sources, and then add Community Sources. Touchpad Pro should now be in the Utilities list. Still can't find it?
Remember, if you have the App Store icon on your device, that means you're on the new firmware, and cannot use Touchpad Pro! If you're sure you have the older firmware and still can't find the app, go to the Sources tab at the bottom right corner of the screen, tap Edit, then Add, and then type http://iphone.sleepers.net/repo.xml and tap OK. Go back to step 2.

Apple Remote Desktop is bundled with older Macs (Tiger), and does not support ScreenView. To make ScreenView work on your Mac, you will need to install Vine Server.

Even if you are using Screen Sharing, which is on newer Macs (Leopard), it's still a good idea to install Vine Server. Vine Server is much faster than Screen Sharing and also uses less power on both your Mac and your iPhone / iPod Touch.

Here are the steps you need to follow to install Vine Server:

Disable Apple Remote Desktop or Screen Sharing if they are enabled.
Download Vine Server.
Mount the image you downloaded and run it.
Click on the Run Server button.
In Touchpad Pro, first go to Preferences, and turn off the Limit Mac CPU Fix option and tap Save.
You're done!

If you're having trouble connecting, make sure that your Vine Server is using port 5900.

The good news is that there is a way of getting the same functionality offered by Touchpad Pro (and more) on the App Store. The application is called Jaadu, and the company name is Jugaari. The functionality actually exceeds that of Touchpad Pro, with features such as automatic server discovery, and screen-view zoom, although the application is completely unrelated to the Touchpad Pro code base.

The bad news is that developers cannot offer discounts on the App Store. This means that even if you bought Touchpad Pro, you will still have to pay the full price for Jaadu.

This is a decision that's out of our hands, and as much as we'd like to make your transition to iPhone 2.0 / iPhone 3G a smooth and free one, there is nothing we can do.

However, we will be porting Touchpad Pro over to the 2.0 jailbreak at some point in the future -- we just don't have a confirmed timeframe for exactly when that will happen. Once it does, your existing activation will work on your new firmware (or the activation can be transferred if you have a different phone).

In the meantime, what we can offer you is a refund if you had bought Touchpad Pro in the last 30 days. Please send in your Touchpad Pro receipt (which contains your serial and transaction ID) requesting a refund and we will honor all requests provided you bought the application since the last 30 days.

As an extra gesture, until September 1, 2008, we will honor all refund requests for purchases made any time after July 1, 2008.

If you see this error, it most definitely means that the password you have entered in Touchpad Pro does not match the password you entered in your VNC server. To fix this:

For Windows users, double click the TightVNC statusbar icon, and enter a new password in the Primary password field. Enter this password in your server settings in Touchpad Pro.
For Mac users, get to the password option for your VNC server and enter a new password there. Enter this password in your server settings in Touchpad Pro.
Connect! In 90% of the cases, this is enough to fix the problem.

If this doesn't work, it means that you're connecting to a different VNC server without realizing it. If so, disable / shut every running VNC server, and restart the one whose password you just set, and then connect.

If you're running Windows, double click the TightVNC icon in the status bar. Make sure that none of the "Block remote input" options are selected.
- If that doesn't work, you're probably connecting using your View-only password. Delete your View-only password, and re-write your Primary password in the TightVNC settings window. Then connect and you should be able to control the mouse and keyboard.
If you're on a Mac, and are not using Vine Server, make sure that you've enabled the "VNC viewers may control screen with password" in Screen Sharing / Apple Remote Desktop

Introducing Touchpad Media Server

Summary: Touchpad Media Server lets you control any media player using any web browser on any device, or using Touchpad Pro v3. Windows users: try first. Mac users read on. [Store currently down]

Touchpad Media Server enables you to send various special media keys using Touchpad, or through a limited web-interface. Currently, Touchpad Media Server only supports Windows -- Mac support will begin soon. The media players supported include:

iTunes
Windows Media Player
Windows Media Center Edition
Vista Media Center
WinAmp
Media Player Classic
Any media player that accepts media keys (almost all media players!)

Here's what Touchpad Media Server looks like via Touchpad Pro:

Admittedly, it's a lot more minimalist. You can also scroll to reveal other buttons that you can use to present PowerPoint among other things.

Touchpad Media Server Installation:

Download the trial edition of Touchpad Media Server and run it.
- If your computer doesn't recognize .msi files, follow these steps.
- If you get a message saying that you need to install the .NET framework, download and install this first, and then go back to step 1.
Once you've got everything installed, go to the Start Menu, then click on Programs > Touchpad Pro > Touchpad Media Server Trial. You should now see this (although you'll currently be running the trial version):
There's one final option you'll need to set -- choose the player your want to control: iTunes, Generic and Windows Media Player.
- iTunes: This will give you the best user experience for the time being. This option supports all the 9 buttons on the media remote, as well as graphical updates of the currently playing song, and you can even drag the knob to skip around in a song. Even if iTunes isn't currently open, it will automatically be launched -- and even if it isn't the currently highlighted window, it will still respond to the media remote. Note that the volume buttons will only set the volume in iTunes.
- Generic: Use this setting to control ANY media player (such as Media Center, Winamp, etc.). This will make the media remote buttons act like the media buttons on your regular keyboard / laptop. Play/pause, next track, previous track, stop, and the volume buttons will all control whatever media player is currently in focus. Fast forward and rewind will trigger the left and right arrow keys, while the rest of the buttons act as regular media buttons. There is no visual feedback on your device's screen, which makes the media remote act purely as an input device. Depending on your media player, the volume buttons will either control the global volume on your computer or the volume of the media player.
- Windows Media Player: With this option selected, your media remote will control Windows Media Player -- if it hasn't currently started, it will be automatically launched, and if it's not the currently focused window, it will still respond to the media remote. However, I haven't gotten it working to the point where you can seek around in a song, or even get the current track name or volume setting. Because of this, there is no visual feedback on your screen -- the media remote will act purely as an input device. You can use the Play/Pause, Stop, Next/Previous Track buttons as well as the volume buttons -- note that the volume will only be set in Windows Media Player.
You now have two options to connect: you can either use Touchpad Pro, or you can use any web browser.

Using Touchpad Pro

To connect with Touchpad Pro, follow these instructions. If you've already set up a server, go to the server settings page by clicking on the blue arrow next to your computer name (e.g., mediapc), and enable Media Server (this is the default value). When you connect, you'll have the extra media functionality enabled. Tap the remote button to get access to the media controls.

Using a Web Browser

This is useful if you don't want to jailbreak your device, or if you have a different smartphone with a web browser. The web location is indicated by "Touchpad Web Access" on the screen. In the example shown above, you would point your device's (iPhone / iTouch / smartphone) browser to http://192.168.3.33:6000

Whichever way you connect to Touchpad Media Server, once you're connected, your media remote will control whatever player you've selected. Since this is a trial, the Media Server stops after a minute and will need to be manually restarted -- click "Show Options" and then "Start Server" to do this.

If you have connection issues, go through the steps in the Windows Connection Troubleshooter.

Once you are sure that Touchpad Media Server works on your computer, and if you want to remove the one minute limit on server connections, you can buy the full version. Please make sure that you've tried the trial version, and have successfully connected to the server before buying. Understand that there is absolutely no difference between the trial and the full version beyond the one minute server-stopping limit -- if the trial does not work for you, neither will the full version!

Once you've bought it, you'll be emailed a download link -- check your spam folder if you think you haven't gotten it. Buying the full version will give you access to all the incremental updates -- which means any and all bug fixes, as well as any improvements to the controls to the settings for Windows Media Player and Generic. If there's substantially new functionality (like customizable buttons), that probably won't be covered.

Installing VNC

To connect Touchpad Pro v3 with a Windows machine, you first need to have VNC installed. If you've never heard of VNC, follow these steps. Even if you have VNC installed, I highly recommend following these steps, as older versions of VNC have some problems (e.g. dual monitor support is missing from earlier versions).

Go to the TightVNC download page. Donate to them if you can -- they're doing great work. Then download the latest version, as shown here:
Run the installer, clicking through all the steps. Be sure to choose the following options when installing:
Once TightVNC is installed, hover your mouse over the TightVNC icon at the bottom left corner of your Windows screen and write down the IP address that comes up (four numbers separated by dots):

Setting up Touchpad Pro
- On the VNC servers page, click the + icon:
- Then follow these instructions:

Controls for Touchpad Pro v3

Here's some useful information on how to use Touchpad Pro v3:

Click with a quick tap
Right-click with a quick two fingered tap
Scroll with two fingered vertical swipes
Present PowerPoint with two fingered horizontal swipes
Zoom by pinching with two fingers
Type by clicking on the keyboard icon

Want to control your Media Center? Use the Remote Control button. With Touchpad Media Server, you can control iTunes or Media Player even if it's not currently the top window. If you don't have Touchpad Media Server, you'll be able to control media players with reduced functionality.

You can scroll the remote horizontally to reveal extra buttons -- such as the function keys, and a numeric keypad. Soon you'll be able to customize these buttons yourself!

There's now a Windows button which requires Touchpad Media Server to work. You can use it in conjunction with the keyboard for standard shortcuts -- for instance, Windows-D will display the desktop.

The modifiers (e.g., Shift / Control / etc.) now work a bit differently than before. If you press the button once, it will glow -- meaning that it's only going to be on for the next keypress. So if you press Control and then C, it'll fire Ctrl-C, and then Control will go off. If you want to keep a modifier on, double click it -- that'll make it blue, which means that it's on until you click it again to turn it off. This is just like the shift / caps key on the iPhone keyboard.

Details

Here's what each of the advanced gestures / buttons result in:

Scroll: Mousewheel Up / Down
Zoom: Ctrl-Plus / Ctrl-Minus
Horizontal Swipe: Left/Right Arrow Keys
Arrows: Arrow Keys
OK: Enter

In Mac Mode, there are some major differences:

Right-click: Command-Click.
Zoom: Cmd-Opt-Equals / Cmd-Opt-Minus -- does Universal Zoom!

For regular zoom, just press the Cmd button before zooming -- this will result in Cmd-Equals and Cmd-Minus.

Remember, you can combine Shift/Ctrl/Alt with each command. For example:

To navigate your browser history, you can enable Alt, and then use horizontal swipes or the arrow keys (Alt-Left / Alt-Right)
To press Ctrl-C, enable Ctrl, and then press C on the on-screen keyboard
To press Alt-F4, enable Alt, and then F4 on the Remote Control function keypad
To launch Windows Task Manager, enable Ctrl and Shift, and then press Esc on the Remote Control

Windows Connection Troubleshooting

If you're having trouble connecting to either TightVNC or Touchpad Media Server, it's very likely that it's a firewall issue. If that doesn't do it, you need to make sure that your device is on the same network as your PC -- for instance, if your PC is connected to your DSL connection, but your iPhone is on your neighbor's wifi, most likely none of this will work.

Configuring the Firewall

This sounds scarier than it is :) Just follow these simple steps:

Click on the Start Menu, and click on Control Panel
In Control Panel, click on Network and Internet Connections:
Then, click on Change Windows Firewall Settings:
Now check to see if your firewall is on. If the firewall is off, STOP here -- you don't need to change anything. However, if it's on, then you need to keep reading.
Make sure the exceptions button is not checked:
Next click on the Exceptions tab at the top:
In the Exceptions view, click on the Add Port button:
Set the name to "VNC Server", and set the port to 5900. Press OK.
Click on Add Port again. This time, set the name to "Touchpad Media Server", and set the port to 6000. Press OK.
Click OK on the Windows Firewall page and pat yourself on the back -- you just configured the firewall settings to allow TightVNC and Touchpad Media Server to work with your firewall. Remember, if your firewall was off to begin with, you don't need to do any of this.

Connecting to a Mac

Setting up your Mac

Go to System Preferences, and then Sharing:
Enable Screen Sharing (it's called Apple Remote Desktop on older Macs)
You'll be shown a host name to connect to (e.g., homemac.lan)
Click on the Options button, and enable the VNC password, and type in a password
Click OK, and then click Show All to return to the System Preferences page. From here, click on Universal Access
Enable Zoom, and then click on the Zoom Options button
Enter the setting shown below
Click OK -- you've now set up your Mac.

Setting up Touchpad Pro

On the VNC servers page, click the + icon:

You can now choose Mac Mode, which allows zooms and right clicks on Mac

You can now disable Flick Inertia (although I think it's way cool)

Thanks for using Touchpad Pro. I thought of the application after using VNsea, which was great, but lacked the functionality I wanted. I had no idea how to write an app for the iPhone, and so I started by reading through a couple of websites (such as iphonegameover.com and ericasadun.com), which I highly recommend if you're interested in learning the ropes. I then started tinkering with the VNsea code, and figured out how to change it to work as a touchpad. I then made a youtube video and put up a webpage for the app on my university website.

I was really amazed with the response! Within 5 days, there were around 100,000 hits to the site, and around 200,000 video views. Even after 10 days, and there are around 4,000 daily page views :) It was great to read your comments complimenting the application, as well as the constructive feedback on what you wanted to see in the next release. I apologize if I haven't been able to reply to all the emails I've been getting -- please read the comments on the main page if you're stuck, many people have posted problems and solutions.

I listened to the feedback carefully, and put in all of the major features that you requested. I hope you enjoy Touchpad Pro -- it's the result of many long hours worth of coding and so I'd love to hear whether you like the app, and what uses you've found for it. It's free to download and use, and if you find it useful, I would really appreciate it if you donate. I've received a grand total of 3 donations even with 100,000+ page views -- so it's clear that I didn't work on this current release (Touchpad Pro) for the money -- but it would still be nice to know if you liked it well enough to want to vote with your wallet. To the guys who donated so far, thanks a lot, I honestly appreciate it :) I used part of that money to register the touchpadpro.com domain so that it's easier for people to visit the site and to send it on to others.

Now that you've got Touchpad Pro up and running, you need to connect to a Server. This is a program running on your PC/Mac that'll allow you to control it. Once you've set up your PC/Mac, you'll have to add the server's name, address and vnc password to Touchpad Pro to connect.

Installing VNC Server

If you're running Windows:

Download TightVNC and install it.
If there's no icon with a V on the bottom right corner of the screen, find TightVNC in your Start Menu > Programs folder, and click on Launch VNC Server.
Set the password to something you'll remember.
Hover your mouse over the V icon on the bottom right corner of the screen, and write down the IP address that comes up.

If you're on a Mac:

You already have VNC installed, but it's called Screen Sharing or Apple Remote Desktop. Go to System Preferences, and then Sharing.
Turn on Screen Sharing (or "Apple Remote Desktop" on older Macs); you'll be given a host name or an IP address, write this down.
Turn on VNC viewer controls in the Settings box, and give it a password you'll remember.

Setting it up on Touchpad Pro

Click on the + icon at the top right corner of the screen
Enter anything for the name, e.g., homepc
Enter the IP address or host name you wrote down earlier. This can either be four numbers with dots, e.g., 192.168.1.42, or one or more words, e.g., yourhost.lan
Enter the password you were supposed to remember
Click Save

Connect by clicking on the name you entered (e.g., homepc). If all goes well, you should now be connected to your PC/Mac, and you can now learn how to use Touchpad Pro.

Connection Troubleshooting

It seems a lot of people have problems connecting Touchpad Pro to their VNC server on the PC or Mac. Here are a couple of things to look at:

Make sure your device (iPhone / iPod Touch) is on the same network as your computer.

You need to have a wireless router.

Your device has to be connected to this router through Wi-Fi.
Your computer has to be connected to this router through either a wire or Wi-Fi.

Make sure your computer doesn't have a firewall blocking access to port 5900.
If that doesn't work, read this troubleshooting guide.
If that doesn't work, try asking the friendly folks on the ipodtouchfans.com forum page for Touchpad Pro for help.
If you figure out a fix for the problem, please post it here so that we all get enlightened.

It is possible to get Touchpad Pro working with your Windows / Mac laptop in an ad-hoc / p2p wireless mode, where you don't have a router. But that's far more complicated. To do that, you need to create an ad-hoc network on the laptop, and join it from your device. Note the IP address on your laptop, and connect to that IP in Touchpad Pro.

Want to control your Media Center? Use the Remote Control button. This is designed for media players such as Media Player Classic and WinAmp, but should work with most HTPC / Media Center setups.

Here's an explanation of the icons in Mac Mode:

Presses the Shift key

Presses the Control key

Presses the Command key

Presses the Opt key

When not in Mac Mode, the Fn button in conjunction with a number on the keypad presses the corresponding function key. So to press F1, put Fn on, and then press 1.

Here's what each of the advanced gestures / buttons result in:

Scroll: Mousewheel Up / Down

Zoom: Ctrl-Plus / Ctrl-Minus

Horizontal Swipe: Left/Right Arrow Keys

Arrows: Arrow Keys

OK: Enter

In Mac Mode, Zoom is Cmd-Plus / Cmd-Minus. Right-click is Command-Click.

Remember, you can combine Shift/Ctrl/Alt with each command. For example:

To navigate your browser history, you can enable Alt, and then use horizontal swipes or the arrow keys (Alt-Left / Alt-Right)

To press Ctrl-C, enable Ctrl, and then press C on the on-screen keyboard

To press Alt-F4, enable Fn and Alt, and then press 4 on the on-screen keyboard

To launch Windows Task Manager, enable Ctrl and Shift, and then press Esc on the Remote Control

To use accessibility zoom in Mac Mode, enable Ctrl and zoom with two fingers

Touchpad enables you to use your iPhone (or iPod Touch) as a wireless touchpad. You can control the mouse on your PC using just your iPhone. You can move the mouse around, click, double-click, and even drag (double click but keep it pressed and then move around). Vertical scrolling is even possible, by click-and-dragging on the right edge of the iPhone screen.

You can use it to control videos, show pictures, advance slides in a presentations -- whatever a regular touchpad can do.

Installation instructions:

You need a jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch with Installer.app on it. Here are some great instructions on how to do this.
Start Installer.app, and go to Sources. Click "Edit", and then Add this repository: http://cnp.qlnk.net/
After the refresh, install Touchpad from the Utilities category.
Install VNC on the machine you want to control. I recommend TightVNC for Windows and Linux. Mac users should follow these detailed instructions (thanks, Archetype!).
